Nationalism and democracy

Thursday, August 20, 2009Skender
What, though, do we mean by nationalism? The traditional definition is the desire of a people or a language-group to form an independent and unitary state. Seen like that, is it so very different from what we mean by democracy?
To the democratic radicals of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the two concepts were inseparable.

A European "Cordon sanitaire"?

Friday, July 17, 2009Skender
Accompanied by a militaristic flag-raising ceremony and the strains of Beethoven’s Ode to Joy — the European anthem — the new members of the most Eurosceptic European Parliament gathered in Strasbourg yesterday to begin work.

Hans-Gert Pöttering, the outgoing President of the Parliament, urged MEPs to unite to freeze "anti-Europeans" out of the decision-making process for the next five years.

Ook Vlaanderen lijdt aan de Belgische ziekte

Thursday, July 16, 2009Skender

Vlaamse hospitalisatieverzekering bestendigt systeemfouten

Skender

The EU contributes to the hollowing out of public life

Wednesday, June 10, 2009Skender
Low voter turnout doesn’t come from any problem of presentation; it is the logical conclusion to the EU’s system of behind-the-scenes political manoeuvring that is seen as unsuitable for public engagement and scrutiny. As a result of this, EU officials come across as they really are: bureaucrats rather than political leaders.
...
The manipulative and dishonest style of rule-making confirms people’s cynicism towards conventional politics. Worse still, the insulation of decision-making directly contributes to the hollowing out of public life, which far too many people now see as pointless and irrelevant. In such circumstances, movements that are able to politicise people’s anger and dissatisfaction are able to make significant headway.

Buying peace

Tuesday, June 2, 2009Skender
Belgium is infested with politicians (it has six parliaments for a country of 10m people). That is because public money is used to buy peace in Belgium, whose Dutch- and French-speaking halves increasingly loathe each other. As a result, endless obscure ministers inhabit a world of obscure public bodies, run by political hacks and serviced by a parasitic class of consultants, lawyers and the like—often members of their families.

The ancestors of modern political genocide

Sunday, May 31, 2009Skender
Friedrich Engels in the newspaper "Neue Rheinische Zeitung", published by Karl Marx on January 13th 1849.
There is no country in Europe which does not have in some corner or other one or several ruined fragments of peoples, the remnant of a former population that was suppressed and held in bondage by the nation which later became the main vehicle of historical development. These relics of a nation mercilessly trampled under foot in the course of history, as Hegel says, these residual fragments of peoples always become fanatical standard-bearers of counter-revolution and remain so until their complete extirpation or loss of their national character, just as their whole existence in general is itself a protest against a great historical revolution.
...
The next world war will result in the disappearance from the face of the earth not only of reactionary classes and dynasties, but also of entire reactionary peoples. And that, too, is a step forward.
Translation by marxists.org
Marx began it, he was the ancestor of modern political genocide, and I don't know that any European thinker of the modern period before Marx and Engels ever publicly advocated racial extermination. I can't find anything earlier, so I presume it starts with them.

Anti-emancipatorische politieke ideologie

Skender

Laten we België afschaffen

Monday, May 25, 2009Skender

It's a bad treaty, but we signed it anyway

Wednesday, May 20, 2009Skender
This treaty is bad and we know it. We supported the treaty among other things because we were a party in government and because we signed it and because we agreed on a compromise at the level of the European Council.

Belgische democratie

Monday, May 18, 2009Skender
