De gedachte dat de islam democratisch inpasbaar zou zijn, vloeit voort uit het misverstand dat het hier een godsdienst betreft. Maar de islam, gesticht door een liefhebber van bruut geweld, is een anti-emancipatorische politieke ideologie, met genoeg metafysisch verguldsel om de ongeletterden te verblinden.

Een chanterende omstandigheid is dat extreem-rechts zich tegen de islam kant (en dus de juiste analyse aan de verkeerde motivatie paart). Links zwijgt. Is het een gebod van de democratie, een partij zoals de NPD te verbieden, of is het verbieden van een partij die haar doelstellingen geweldloos nastreeft een inbreuk tegen het democratieprincipe? Vormt verbruikend embryo-onderzoek een inbreuk op de menselijke waardigheid of is het net te rechtvaardigen met de waardigheid van de zieken die gered kunnen worden met de op basis van dit onderzoek ontwikkelde medicatie? Zulke vragen worden in verschillende Europese landen verschillend beantwoord. Met het verdrag van Lissabon wordt het definitieve oordeel over deze vragen niet langer door de nationale grondwettelijke rechtsinstanties geveld, maar door het Europees Hof van Justitie.

Met de ene hand probeert de overheid de grootste separatistische partij financieel te nekken. Met de andere hand financiert diezelfde overheid een antiseparatistische politieke manifestatie vlak voor de verkiezingen. Partijen en kandidaten worden tijdens de campagne stevig gekortwiekt door de overheid. Ze moeten zich houden aan draconische uitgavenbeperkingen. Dat gaat zelfs zo ver dat gewone kandidaten nauwelijks nog een campagne kunnen voeren die naam waardig. Maar diezelfde overheid mag zelf blijkbaar onbeperkt electorale manifestaties financieren. Dit is toch echt wel de wereld op zijn kop.

Een land waar zulke dubieuze praktijken mogelijk zijn en worden geduld kan men bezwaarlijk een normale democratie noemen. Maar wie maakt zich daar nu nog illusies over?

Welk ander beroep stelt je in staat de geschiedenis te schrijven op hetzelfde moment dat ze ontstaat en er ook rechtstreeks getuige van te zijn? De journalistiek is een buitengewoon, een angstaanjagend privilege.

Wat een moeite kost het niet jaar in jaar uit voort te ploeteren op aarde, en tegelijkertijd is dat het enige geluk.
